James 'Whitey' Bulger:

James 'Whitey' Bulger is alleged to be one of Boston's most notorious organized crime leaders whose activities were protected because of his role as an FBI informant.

The FBI attributes at least 19 murders that Bulger was involved in during the time he led the "Winter Hill Gang" located in South Boston during the 1970s and 1980s. After Bulger's relationship with the FBI came to an end, Bulger vanished and has been on the run since 1998.

Update: Bulger was captured in Santa Monica, California without incident on June 23, 2011.

Personal Information:

Bulger was born on September 3, 1929 in Boston, MA. He earned his nickname "Whitey" because of his long silver hair.

At the age of 14 he became involved with the Shamrocks, a Boston street gang. His first arrest was for larceny in 1943.

As a fugitive Bulger became the subject of several books and was the inspiration of the movie "The Departed," the 2006 Best Picture of the Year starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon and Jack Nicholson.
