In 1937, Genovese fled to Italy after being indicted for the murder of Ferdinand Boccia. After the allied invasion in Italy in 1944, Genovese became a trusted liaison officer in headquarters of the U.S. Army. This new relationship did not stop him from running a huge black market operation under the direction of one of the most powerful Mafia bosses in Sicily, Calogero Vizzini.

Genovese was returned to the U.S. after it was discovered that he was a fugitive wanted for murder in New York.
