Goldmans Get O.J.'s Royalties
Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Gerald Rosenberg has ordered that all royalties and other earnings paid to O.J. Simpson for his work in movies, television programs and commercials be redirected directly to the family of Ron Goldman. Judge Rosenberg, however, stopped short of ordering any future Simpson earnings be given to the Goldman family.
Simpson owes the family of Ron Goldman more than $38 million from a judgment in their wrongful death lawsuit for the deaths of Goldman and Nicole Brown Simpson. He has never paid anything toward the settlement.
Lawyer for both sides called Judge Rosenberg's decision a victory. Yale Galanter, an attorney for Simpson, said the royalties awarded to the Goldmans amount to very little money.
"Last year Simpson's royalty checks from all of his movies were less than 39 cents," Galanter said. "They got kicked to the curb again," he added. "Every door they're banging on gets slammed."
Simpson appeared in the "Naked Gun" movies and the television show "1st and Ten." He also appeared in commercial for Hertz, running through airports.
David J. Cook, attorney for the Goldmans, said the family would try to find out exactly the amount of the royalties, which are generally paid each time a movie or film is rerun.
"All of the movie residuals are now rerouted to the Goldmans," Cook said. "We presume there is money and we're not going to take their word for it."
