Orange County Circuit Judge Belvin Perry Jr. warned attorneys at a status hearing that there will be no further delays or postponements in the first-degree murder trial of Casey Anthony, charged with the death of her 2-year-old daughter Caylee. Judge Perry also told the lawyers to expect to work long days six days a week as the trial gets underway.Jury selection is scheduled to begin May 9, 2011 in the capital murder trial.
"This case must come to an end at some point. This case must be tried at some point," Judge Perry told lawyers. "and I know that everybody has placed this on their front burner."
Judge Perry also warned the attorneys that all facets of discovery should be resolved prior to the beginning of the trial, saying that there will be no "trial by ambush" in his court.
Jury Will Be From Outside Orlando
"How much time you get to sleep at night will be strictly on you," Judge Perry said. "If you don't share things, then y'all are going to find a lot of evenings ya'll are going to be together, giving depositions, taking statements. It makes for a long next day."
Jury selection will take place in another Florida county and the jurors will be transported to Orlando for opening statements, due to the publicity the case has gotten in Orlando.
Caylee Anthony disappeared in June 2008, but she was not reported missing for 31 days. Her remains were found five months later in a swampy area near the Anthony home. Casey Anthony has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder charges, among others.
