Defendant in Coma, Trial Delayed
Jury selection for the murder trial of a man accused of a deadly home invasion of a Connecticut family has been delayed because the defendant is reportedly in a coma. Attorneys of Steven Hayes is in intensive care in a Connecticut hospital, his attorney said.Jury selection for the murder trial had been scheduled to begin Monday.
A conference is scheduled Wednesday to determine the status of the trial. "We have no idea how long this is going to take," attorney Thomas Ullmann said.
A Drug Overdose?
Hospital officials would not comment on Hayes' condition, but the Hartford Courant reported that Hayes apparently overdosed on medication that he was supposed to be taking daily and was found unconscious in his cell. The newspaper said Hayes may be in a medically induced coma.
Hayes, 46, and Joshua Komisarjevsky, 29, face charges of felony murder, kidnapping, sexual assault and arson in connection with the July 2007 invasion of the home of Dr. William Petit and left his wife and two daughters dead.
