The man awaiting trial for the murder of Chandra Levy has been indicted on charges of obstructing justice, threatening to injure a person and conspiracy. Prosecutors said the new charges against Ingmar Guandique are related to the defendant threatening a witness in the case.Chandra Levy disappeared in May 2001 shortly after completing a federal internship in Washington. Her body was found a year later in Rock Creek Park.
The new charges against Guandique stem from a letter Guandique wrote to a witness identified in court papers only as "J.G." The note threatened to kill J.G. or his family if the witness cooperated with law enforcement.
Threatening Letter Mailed to Witness
The indictment said a second letter was mailed to the witness by someone else involved in the conspiracy with Guandique.
After years of investigation into the Levy case, Guandique was charged with her murder mainly because of witnesses who said he admitted to the crime. When he was indicted for Levy's murder, Guandique was serving time for assaults on two other women in the same park where Levy's remains were found.
Last week, the court announced that Guandique's trial was being delayed from its scheduled start next month because new charges were being filed.
