4 More Bodies Found in Rapist's Home

Wednesday November 4, 2009
Investigators found the remains of at least four more bodies at the Cleveland home of a convicted rapist and are continuing to search. Anthony Sowell, 50, who lives at the home, has been charged with five counts of aggravated murder so far.

Four more bodies were found buried in the back yard and a skull in a bucket in the basement.

The police began finding the bodies after they received a report from a woman who said Sowell raped her and they went to the address to arrest him. Officers found two decomposing bodies in the living room. Later, the police found another body in the basement, two in an upstairs crawl space and one in a shallow grave in the backyard.

Residents Reported Foul Odors

Tuesday, using cadaver dogs and digging equipment, they found the remains of four more bodies in the backyard and found a skull in a bucket in the basement. It is not known if the skull represents an 11th victim or belongs to one of the 10 decomposing bodies.

Authorities also searched a quarter-mile area around Sowell's home in abandoned and boarded-up buildings but found not other bodies. They plan to search inside the walls of Sowell's home.

Residents in the inner-city neighborhood where Sowell lives had long complained of foul odors in the area, especially in the summer. But they believed the smells were coming from Ray's Sausage, a brick building on the corner where workers produce sausage and head cheese.

The owners of the sausage company even replaced all of their sewer lines and grease traps to try to get rid of the smell, officials said.
