Anesthetic Killed Michael Jackson

By , About.com GuideAugust 24, 2009

Follow me on:

Michael Jackson died of a lethal dose of a powerful anesthetic and the Los Angeles coroner has ruled his death a homicide, according to court papers filed in Texas. Search warrants and affidavits filed in Houston to search the office and storage unit of Dr. Conrad Murray confirm the pop singer's cause of death.

Jackson died June 25 at his rented home in Holby Hills in Los Angeles County.

On Monday, The Associated Press quoted an unnamed law enforcement official saying that the Los Angeles coroner had ruled Jackson's death a homicide. The coroner determined a fatal combination of drugs was given to Jackson hours before he died by Dr. Murray.

Michael Jackson's Last Hours

Also Monday, the New York Times reported that search warrants and court documents filed by the police in Houston outlined the following details of the final hours of Jackson's death:

  • Dr. Murray told investigators that he gave Jackson an IV drip of 50 milligrams of propofol, an anesthetic, each night for six weeks prior to his death.

  • Dr. Murray also gave Jackson Lorazepam, an anti-anxiety drug, and Midazolam, a muscle relaxant, to treat his insomnia.

  • On the day Jackson died, Dr. Murray also gave Jackson propofol and other drugs, including Valium.

  • Dr. Murray told investigators that he left Jackson's side for about two minutes to go to the bathroom and when he returned, Jackson was not breathing.

  • Dr. Murray gave Jackson flumazenil, a drug used to reverse the effects of sedative overdose. He also began cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

  • Dr. Murray continued CPR for 82 minutes before paramedics were called to the scene.

According to the court documents, Dr. Murray told investigators that he was not the only doctor who had given Jackson propofol. He believed Jackson was addicted to the anesthetic and he claimed he tried to wean him off the drug.

No charges have been filed in the case and the Los Angeles coroner's office has not yet released its official findings.

We have to give the man his due: Michael Jackson was – beyond a shadow of a doubt – a great artist whose recorded legacy will endure for decades, maybe even a century or more. But an examination of his life is riddled with questions of all that might have been; all that should have been. It is more than likely that this was a severely mentally ill human being who never sought the treatment he so desperately needed; surrounded by fawning sycophants who enabled his sickness by constantly reassuring him that he could do no wrong. As John Lennon once said in the same context about Elvis Presley, another victim of the excesses of fame: “It’s always the courtiers that kill the king”.

The sad, inescapable truth is that for reasons we will probably never be able to fully understand, his talent and his career were ultimately wasted. Like Charlie Parker, Montgomery Clift, Judy Garland and Lenny Bruce before him, his brilliance as an artist would be overshadowed by severe, psychological torment and an unexplainable desire for self-destruction. Therein lies the real, unspeakable tragedy of Michael Jackson.

I believe Michael Jackson was being used for his money and unfortunately he had many enablers to help him with his addiction. I belive the doctor hired by Jackson prior to his passing should be accountable. He was not following procedures, no ethics whatsover! I also believe that Michael was innocent of those allegations against him. Whatever Jackson did or did not do is between God and Michael and may God bless his soul.

Tom, I liked what you wrote about Michael Jackson and other well-gifted artists. The MEDICAL enabler’s need to be punished in the fullest. I don’t care how much money someone comes up with to pay them to get the drugs, etc. these people think they need – Doctor’s have a responsibility to uphold to the welfare of their patients!! We need to make these Doctor’s fully accountable for their actions. We need stricter laws against these murderers so this does not keep happening.

ok so- Michael is dead. and whatever medications he was taking killed him….
how do we know, WHAT IF- MICHAEL WAS GETTING AN OUTSIDE STASH FROM ANOTHER SOURCE?
WHAT IF IT WAS AN OVERDOSE…. WHAT IF THE DR. WANTED TO BE KNOWN AS THE “ONE THAT KILLED THE GREAT MICHAEL JACKSON?”
OR, MAYBE THE DOCTOR HAD A DEAL W/ MICHAEL TO END HIS LIFE….AND THE ‘GOOD DR. HELPED’
WHAT IF MICHAEL REALLY WAS ADDICTED TO PRESCRIPTIONS, HE WOULDN’T BE THE FIRST.
ELVIS, MARILYNN, KURT CORBAINE, AND SO MANY MORE….. WHY WOULD THE ‘GREAT’ MICHAEL JACKSON HAVE ANY LESS CHANCE OF BECOMING ADDICTED THAN A BUM ON THE STREET OR A SPOILED HOUSE WIFE TAKING VALIUM OR OCXYCONTIN OR ANOTHER SEDATIVE? I REALLY BELEIVE MICHAEL JACKSON HAD A PLAN TO EASE HIS OWN PERSONAL DEMONS AND MENTAL ISSUES… WHY ELSE WOULD HE NEED A PERSONAL PHYSICIAN BY HIS SIDE 24 HRS A DAY- AND LEAVE THE ROOM FOR 2 MINUTES TO USE THE RESTROOM, COME BACK IMMEDIATELY TO FIND HIM DEAD? IS THE DOCTOR RESPONSIBLE? MAYBE, BUT SO IS MICHAEL… HE MADE CHOICES!

I am so confused about this entire Michael Jackson case. Dr.Murray gives MJ all those sedatives and diprivan as well? Didn’t he know it could kill his patient? I’m sure he didn’t want him to die but Dr. Murray didn’t take any precautions to save his life by having life saving equipment in the house. Also, why are the police going after doctors that supplied Michael with drugs before doctor Murray was his doctor, they didn’t administer the drugs that killed Michael. If they want to take away their licenses for prescribing to an addict that’s one thing, but doctor Murray was negligent on that day. Also, why did he wait so long to call EMS and I thought if a patient is dead, the coroner comes to the house and that they never take a dead body to a hospital when the person died at home. Didn’t EMS know Michael Jackson was dead for hours — why did they perform CPR on him knowing he was dead? This whole thing has so many holes in it.
