Mexican police have arrested four men in connection with the shooting death of U.S. Border Patrol agent Robert Rosas who was killed last week while investigating a border incursion near Campo, California. The four men are allegedly part of a immigrant smuggling ring.Police said 21 people and four guns were found with the suspects when they were arrested.
The four arrested Saturday were Jose Quintero Ruiz, 43, and his brother Jose Eugenio Quintero Ruiz, 49, and taxi drivers Jose Alfredo Camacho, 34 and Antonio Valladares, 57. Mexican police did not say what lead them to the suspects.
Arrested Friday in the case was Ernesto Parra Valenzuela, 36. Mexican authorities said that Valenzuela was arrested near the crime scene with a Border Patrol-issued weapon in his possession. He was wounded and taken to a hospital.
More Suspects Sought
Federal authorities have notified hospitals on both sides of the border to watch for gunshot victims. Evidence at the scene suggests that more than one person was wounded, perhaps by Rosas (pictured above).
"Agent Rosas' murder is a tragic reminder of the ever-present dangers CBP officers, Air & Marine and Border Patrol agents face as they protect our nation's borders," said U. S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Jayson Ahern in a statement. "The FBI, the San Diego County Sheriff's Office, our brothers and sisters in ICE, and the government of Mexico all are working with CBP in an international effort to locate and bring to justice the perpetrators of this atrocious act."
Rosas was the first Border Patrol agent to die in a shooting in more than 10 years. Another agent, Luis Aguilar, was intentionally run over by a drug dealer in January 2008.
