Trial Begins for Pheonix 'Serial Shooter'

Tuesday September 2, 2008
Jury selection is scheduled to begin this week in the murder trial of a Arizona man that Pheonix authorities say terrorized the area during a 14-month shooting spree between May 2005 and July 2006. Dale Shawn Hausner, 35, pleaded not guilty to eight killings and 20 other shootings.

A former roommate of Hausner's who pleaded guilty to two murders in the case plans to testify against him during the trial.

Samual Dieteman, who lived with Hausner for four months prior to their arrest in August 2006, told investigators that he and Hausner would drive around Pheonix neighborhoods at night in search of targets. They shot a horses, pets and people, he said.

It was "just random, senseless destruction," Dieteman said when he pleaded guilty.

Prior to riding with Dieteman on his late night shooting sprees, Hausner would cruise neighborhoods with his brother, Jeff Hausner, investigators said. Jeff Hausner is serving a seven-and-a-half year sentence for a stabbing and has been indicted for another stabbing.
