Teacher Pleads Guilty to Sex With Student

Monday July 7, 2008
A former Nebraska teacher who fled to Mexico with a 13-year-old student has entered a guilty plea to transporting a minor across state lines to have sex in a deal that allows her to avoid a mandatory 10-year sentence. Kelsey Peterson, 26, a former math teacher at Lexington Middle School, is expected to be sentenced to at least 70 months in prison.

After the plea hearing, members of Peterson's family claim that she is being unjustly accused and shouted to reporters to ask the victim, Fernando Rodriguez, how old he really is.

Peterson's family members and her attorney insist that Rodriguez is at least 16 years old. Attorney James Martin Davis has questioned the boy's birth certificate and claims that he is 16 years old and was the aggressor in the relationship.

Prosecutors, on the other hand, say the boy was 12 when the relationship with Peterson began.

Peterson and the boy disappeared in October after she was questioned by investigators about her relationship with him. She was arrested a week later in Mexicali, Mexico.

Although the boy and his family were in the United States illegally, he has been returned from Mexico, reunited with his family and they are living somewhere in Nebraska.
