A 63-year-old sex offender who has spent most of his life in prison for sex crimes, has been charged with a seventh murder in Illinois in 1978, one of several murders he is suspected of during a brief time outside prison from 1977 to 1982. Timothy Krajcir is suspected of killing women in four states during that time.

Illinois State Attorney Charles Garnati filed first-degree murder charges last week against Krajcir for the death of Virginia Lee Witte, 51, of Marion, Illinois. She died in 1978. This month, Krajcir pleaded guilty to the 1982 strangling of Southern Illinois University student Deborah Sheppard.

The new Illinois charges froze efforts by the state of Missouri to extradite Krajcir where he was charged earlier this month with killing five women in Cape Girardeau. Karjcir is also suspected of killing women in Paducah, Kentucky and Reading, Pennsylvania.

Krajcir is currently serving a 40-year sentence at the Tamms Correctional Center in Illinois for killing Sheppard.
