Virginia Tech Shooter Identified

Tuesday April 17, 2007
Police have identified the Virginia Tech shooter as Cho Seung-Hui (pronounced Choh Suhng-whee), of Centreville, Virginia, who was a senior at Virginia Tech. Cho Seung-Hui, 23, born in South Korea was an English major whose creative writing was so disturbing, it has been reported that he had been referred to the school's counseling services.

Professor Carolyn Rude, chairwoman of the university’s English department, told the AP, "There was some concern about him," Rude said, "Sometimes, in creative writing, people reveal things and you never know if it’s creative or if they’re describing things, if they’re imagining things or just how real it might be. But we’re all alert to not ignore things like this."

According to CNN his writings referred to murder and pedophilia, although school officials say they will not release the writings at this time. It is not known if Cho actually sought the suggested counseling.

Students have described Cho Seung-Hui as a loner among his peers and he was described as "troubled" by some of his professors. Pete Williams, reporter for NBC News, referred to a note written by Cho where he listed random grievances.

South Korea’s Foreign Ministry expressed condolences and hoped the tragedy would not "stir up racial prejudice or confrontation."
