A Florida gunman, who shot and killed an officer and his police dog, was shot at 110 times and hit 68 times when SWAT team members found him the following day hiding in the woods under a tree trunk and he refused to show his hands. Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said the fugitive would have been shot more, but the SWAT team ran out of bullets.

Angilo Freeland (pictured), 27, a suspected drug dealer, fled from police after he was pulled over in a routine traffic stop by Deputy Douglas Speirs. The deputy called for back-up and Deputy Vernon Matthew Williams answered the call with his police dog.

As they followed the suspect into the woods there was a "burst of gunfire" and Deputy Williams and his dog were killed and Speirs was wounded in the leg. An autopsy report revealed that Williams, 39, was shot eight times. He was shot once a close range behind his right ear and again in his right temple.

After a massive manhunt for the fugitive through the night, a SWAT team surrounded Freeland in a thickly wooded area hiding under a fallen tree. When he failed to show the officers both hands and they spotted a handgun in one of his hands, they opened fire. Freeland's autopsy showed that he was shot 68 times. An investigation of the scene revealed that police fired 110 rounds.

"That's all the bullets we had, or we would have shot him more," Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd told reporters.

At work point is a murderous criminal like this guy, not worth the taxpayers money to rot in prison. he took a life of someone who put his life on the line everyday to protect you. Just like if someone killed a member of your family, you would want vengeance. Law enforcement is a family and yes they got their vengeance and it was deserved. And on the matter of being trigger-happy, would it have mattered if they killed him with 1 bullet or 100.

Here’s the thing, though, you don’t know for sure that he was the one that shot the cop. It could have been the guy he was with that ran off that no one saw. This isn’t justice, this is vengeance. We’re above that, people.

The Swat Team and the Sheriff of Polk County need to be arrested and tried for the execution style murder of Angilo Freeland. Their duty was to apprehend Freeland and, if need be, kill him. They were not hired to judge, jury and sentence to death anybody! Sixty-eight (68) out of a hail of 110 bullets is an execution and sounds premeditated to me.

I understand that he didn’t show his hands and they shot him. They didn’t have to shoot him that many times though and they don’t have to brag about it. People do bad things, but i don’t think they should be killed that tragically by people who we look to protect us. That was very bad judgement on the police department.

If any man shoots an officer and his dog for any reason, how can you people feel compasion for him/her. The officer was a man making a living protecting you because he felt it was right and just, and you people don’t feel his death should be avenged. A careless, pathetic, good for nothing man was killed for killing an officer. Eye for an eye! I’m sure you people would feel differently if the innocent people killed were relatives or yourself. Nice job upholding justice Polk County, my hat is off to you gentlemen.

(10) kprncss5495 says:

Do you really want a Sheriff that kisses the butt of every thug just to be sure said thug gets his day in court? Honestly, just how safe would you be when the Sheriff won’t stand up and say “ENOUGH! Abide by the law or bear the consequences”? Submitting to the authority given to law enforcement officers is part of abiding by the law. That’s why their called law ENFORCEMENT. Their job is to enforce the law as peacefully as possible. But understand this, the person being detained by a LEO pretty much determines how he will be treated. I know because my husband is a cop. It doesn’t matter if he’s dealing with the worst drug dealer in Polk County. If the guy is cooperative, then he’s treated fairly. If he acts out and tries to run or tackle my husband, he gets to get up close and personal with the pavement or taser. If he pulls a gun, he gets shot.(thankfully, the last hasn’t happened to my hubby.)

Freeland could have at anytime in the 21 hours that he ran from a speeding ticket and hid in the woods, come out with his hands up and surrendered. He would have gotten his day in court (and a date with the needle). He chose not to do that. He chose instead to run, ambush and murder Matt and DiOGi, steal Matt’s gun, shoot Deputy Spiers, shoot at 2 Detectives and hide in a hole under a huge fallen tree.

110 shots really isn’t that many when
there were 10 SWAT guys armed with M-16s fully auto. 68 confirmed hits but he was probably shot more than that. That’s just the number of holes the ME counted after scraping him back together. 9 of the SWAT team shot (the 10th was positioned so that he would have hit other cops if he fired) after identifing the suspect and telling him more than once to put his hands up. The guy must have not been too bright if he thought pulling out a gun would help his situation.
The M.E. said that if Freeland had stopped at 6 shots, Matt would have lived. Been paralized, but he would be alive. He was shot in both legs, the right wrist, the left arm, his buttocks and in the spine(i can’t imagine that felt good and sounds to me like he was disabling him with intent to murder him, maybe not. that’s just what it sounds like). Then shot at close range behind the ear and one contact shot to the right temple. 8 SHOTS. But, since no one’s outraged by the number of shots used on Matt, I guess 8 shots is acceptable?!

The Swat Team and The Sheriff of Polk County should of been arrested. It funny how a Black man gets shot 68 times and the final answer is, if we had more bullets we would of shot him more. What is the world comming too. People pay attention A Black Man in a White neighborhood–they scaerd Mr. Freeland and this is the way that he suffered being shot 68 times. TRUST ME, they gave their side of story however the real deal is that they harrased Mr. Freeland and now his family suffers from it all. May God have Mercy on florida swat team souls………

Listen to kprncss5495, she is absolutely right. 1)this loser had a choice, he chose poorly, now hes dead and we are all better for it 2) considering the shear number of Officers on scene I am amazed there weren’t more shots fired. It’s not like one Officer shot this scumbag 110 times.
Bottom line that piece of trash didn’t obey the law and he got shot. It’s just to bad he had to kill an Officer(not to mention a father and husband) & Police Dog before he was killed. All you bleeding hearts and ACLU lovers better thank any Police Officer you meet for putting his life on the line every day so we can all live a little safer.God Bless all out LEO’s & Emergency Service providers!

(19) Don says:

There is no doubt that the person shot was a cop killer. As far as I am concerned when we caught him we should have taken him out back in front of everyone and shot the same way he shot the officer. having said that, it does give me a bit of pause when officers on the hunt make that decision on their own. They were right on this guy he deserved to die but there was a similar incident in NJ a few years back. A female police officer was killed and when cops caught their suspect they beat him to death. One problem, it turns out they had the wrong guy.

i have read a lot of comments and from what i’ve seen i do not think that people have comprehended the fullness of the situation. this was a simple traffic stop that turned bad because mr Freeland decided to run. Deputy spiers chased after him and was shot by mr freeland. backup was called and that’s when matt and diogi chased after him. matt was brought down…and then shot eight times point blank. diogi was also shot. hours later…this person was found under a tree one hundred yards from where Matt was found dead….when you kill a cop..you will have every cop in the state on your behind…and they will come ready to defend themselves because once you kill a cop they are put on the highest alert…meaning be ready for anything. they found him with a GUN in his hand…they told him before they discovered the gun to put his hands in the air…he raised one and refused to raise the other…one of the swat members saw the gun and opened fire. remember…this person had just killed a cop and was refusing to show his other hand with the gun in it. now do you guys still side with mr freeland or do you see where you were wrong????

(22) Florida Boy says:

You know what if you all don’t like the way Florida handles cop killers stay out of Florida we don’t need you or want you here. The guy executed a police officer that pulled him over for speeding then took the mans gun and ran 21 hours later he continued to be a threat to the community and SWAT removed him from the gene pool. so to all those people calling for the arrest of the officers I ask you this. What would you have done if one of your friends was just murdered by a guy and you caught up to him hiding under a tree waiting to ambush you?? Most of you liberals calling the officers murders don’t have the stone to put on a badge and do the job your self.

I think you missed it completly. He wasn’t killed to teach anyone a lesson. He was killed to protect the citizens of Florida and the officers trying to apprehend him. I say Bravo for SWAT it warms my heart to read stories like this. The left always make these mistakes when it comes to crime.

Jail is not meant as a deterent it’s punishment.

Killing a murderer who is still armed and dangerous is self defence not execution.

To hell with the criminal, and anyone who thinks we was shot too many times. If he’s dead after 10 shots, another 58 ain’t going to hurt him, and it only costs about twenty five cents a round, so I say keep shooting. I only wish I had been there, I would have improved the hit rate a little.

He was a threat to the officer’s lives, and they responded appropriately. If he had killed one of my co-workers, I would have set his body on fire afterwards, and then peed on him to put it out.

It seems to me they exercised great restraint and professionalism.

Yes that man did a very horrible thing by killing an Up Right man of the Law, but were do law and justice comes in at when law abiding citizens turn around and use extra force in revenge to take down a suspect. Polk co. wanted that individual dead before they even got to him. I would not be surprised if the suspect had information about the entire department (corruption) and they all wanted him dead. Seriously though, if you have a suspect trapped and there is no threat because he never showed any types of weapon, why would you shoot until all amunition is gone. Unless you wanted him dead and did not care about anything but him diying. I would investigate the Department just to make sure things are clean. I would hate to see what happens if another cop get killed in the line of duty what this department would do

Glad the cop killer creep and dope dealer is out of society!!! That is one monster gone, however, SWAT team members are all trained well enough that with their sniper scopes and other weaponry, one bullet to the heart should have done the trick. 68 times hit, 110 shot at is overkill and waste of taxpayer dollars on hollowpoint shells. If a sill OK housewife –formerly married to a jackass that served in ‘Nam– can hit a Stop sign at 75 yards direct hit in the ‘O’ with one hollow point shell, that many officers should have been controlled enough to use no more than 10 on one maggot. I am a firm believer in the death penalty, and law enforcement using their weapons. Since states want to complaint about prison overcrowding — which would not be an issue if we utilized the death penalty in a timely manner, and if crime weren’t out of control, and if the judicial system did not allow every creep on the planet to be bounded out, including child predators and serial killer/rapists — shoot on sight orders would an awesome way to control both crime and another waste of taxpayers’ dollars to feed, house, provide medical care for, a NYC-full of sociological human garbage. I, for one, hate cop killers as much as I hate dirty, abuse cops and corrupt judges. So, a big thank you from a single woman who survived a vicious black serial killer/rapist in St Louis with a sickeningly corrupt black Police Dept promoting crime against white women and children. A big ‘amen’. The cross was good enough for Christ, and He did nothing wrong. It is darn sure good enough for these maggots.

(40) Mac says:

Well, after reading all the comments and reading all about the killing, I am shocked at how it went down. I agree the man needed the death sentance, but not from abunch of angrey police officers, that wanted revenge. They had him cornered and trapped, I did not notice if he was shot at night or in the daytime, but being a expert rifflemen, and knowing the scopes and weapons the sharp shooters use in swat, they could of disarmed him by shooting his shoulder and hitting the pistal, they practice this everyday! And thats what they are trained to do. Wound him, so that he gets a fair trial as all Americans should get, the man was a cold blooded killer, but the ploice and swat should have restrained themselves, thats why we have laws! Of course if this was a family member he killed i would want revenge, a eye for a eye! But as a police officer on duty, all should have did what they where expected to do and uphold the law and give this guy his day in court, he did not fire at the police or swat while under a dead tree, and seeing a pistol does not give them the right to shoot at him 110 times, one should have shot a few warning shots, and than whot his hand or shoulder or tried for the pistol, they where in range and a sniper could of done this! So I agree with some of these comments, all involved resign and have there day in court, for not letting the killer have his day in court, this was mishandled by the chief and swat. We can not alow police officers to be judge and jury and to kill with so much mallace in there heart, thats not what they get paid for, its to up hold the law, to protect and serve and to set examples of what not to do. Again this man needed to die, but by the people and a court room, not by a linching! I would have thought in this day and age that things like this nolonger happen. I guess I was wrong, So Sad!

It was later found out that Spiers had an ongoing affair with Williams wife, and lives with Williams wife to this day. It was also rumored that Deputy Spiers was a drug dealer and Freeland owed him a huge sum of money. Plausabile? Absolutley, given the fact that Freeland was killed before being questioned.

(55) Brad says:

No matter how bad the cops wanted to kill this guy , they acted as jury, judge and executioner. This is unacceptable and at the very least unprofessional and the most it is out right murder. The U.S. Criminal Justice System does not allow for the police to try(kill in this case)one. That is for the courts.

The Sheriff’s comment is disturbing to put it mildly. His statement demonstrates to me he is not fit to hold that office and the cops that fired the shoots should be fired at the least.

That this man did not show his hands/had a gun in his hands sounds on the surface to easy a statement to me-trying to justify the shooting.
If the facts are true, then a few well placed shots would have been all that was needed. No one in their right minds can justify this many bullet wounds to one person. This was vengeful and criminal in my view.
We have juries and judges in the U.S. for crimes-a Criminal Justice System unequal to any other though certainly flawed. This system must be supported by the citizens and that includes law enforcement.
My personal belief is that cops are way to trigger happy in the U.S. and kill to many citizens unnecessarily. The cop is usually let off by the District Attorney in a justifiable shooting ruling.

Cops take the law into there own hands all the time and there’s arrest or jail for them. Cops are not held accountable for there actions. Cops should be tried And if convicted should be sentenced to death by a Judge not the public. Whether a cops job is tough or not Remember they chose it. All of this “right to a fair trial” BS was created during the Salem Witch Trials era to protect people from bogus accusations. Our constitution is way outdated and needs to be re-written. If someone committed a crime then he/she is guilty. This man EXECUTED one cop and would very easily do it again. Anyone who does not agree with what happened should be taken out to the middle of the ocean to walk the plank. Read the article again. He executed a cop by shooting him in the back of the head. Eye for an eye. This last part is for Free Speech who said, “uniforms don’t make a difference.” Try putting on a uniform that can get you killed just for wearing it, and then come back and say that line again.

Being shot 68 times is obscene, these cops are taking justice into their own hands, I can’t believe many of you guys are defending the actions of these law enforcement officers, as a law student I can come up with dozens of civil rights violations commited by these officers, but in the end these cops won’t be convicted of any violation because it’s ignorant people like you guys who make up the jury in our criminal justice system!!!

June 8, 2011 at 11:05 pm
(65) Army Guy says:

Its ignorant people like you who promote the same crime that gets you and cops killed. The people who fight the moral and justice of law enforcement. Every single law enforced by police officers is made by legislature to protect citizens. You denounce the killing of the man who killed the protector of the people. If you only knew what it was like to lose your mother, father, daughter, or son you would understand. 68 bullets could not have been enough. A missile, grenade, or tank rounds would have been better to eliminate the murderer from this planet. It is the same punishment that should be handed to all murders, rapist, child molesters, and gang leaders. But its ok as those police officers are there to protect your right to be ignorant. Just remember who you call if you are robbed, burglarized, assaulted, or someone in your family is murdered. The very same people you denounce are the very same people you depend on in your worst crisis and the very the same people you EXPECT and DEMAND to track down and apprehend or kill(in the case of murdered family) the perpetrator of the crime. Its funny how selfish and quick to judge the actions of others with absolutely no bearing of the consideration for the feelings of others. That police officer had a wife and children. How do they feel? Did officer williams shoot him dead? No it was the other way around. For no reason but to run. And to top it off it was an execution style killing. No judge necessary. Justice has been served.

Just remember who protects the streets you walk on next time you hear of a murder on the news.

Then hid in the woods and threatened a swat team. We actually have evidence he murdered. Fictional harassment theory with no evidence vs two dead cops with evidence. Police with no training on apprehending “suspected” killers. Remember the guy had not been tried or convicted in a court of law yet???
Yes I have been a victim of crime. Yes I had a very close relative murdered in cold blood. Yes I believe in the death penalty. But I also know that we nor the POLICE are judge and jury!!! You people who are trying to make the police out as above the law are contributing to their already narcistic ego’s that allow them to talk to the average citizen as if everyone is guilty of something! Let a cop pull you over sometime and see how they get their sick little kicks out of dominance and sadistic behavior. Just like the man said, a uniform is a uniform. This was murder! As they followed the suspect into the woods there was a “burst of gunfire” and Deputy Williams and his dog were killed and Speirs was wounded in the leg. Its called wait for back up. Take the uniform off they aren’t “GODS” they r people like the rest of us. I know first hand that “all cops ” aren’t good cops. There are bad cops too; and a lot of times things are over looked even when it shouldn’t be. I found that out at 9 yrs old- that they r not all good. Just because others want to believe they r all perfect doesn’t mean they really r. U just haven’t had a bad experience with the ones that u look at as “protectors”.

Cops take it personally when one kills them, and are likely to over-look the particular facts of the in individual case; I’m not surprised that these cops “would’ve shot him more, ‘but they ran out of bullets’” this is a typical response, remember that they are not in the position of power to protect the citizens of the State, they are in a position of power to protect the Stat’s interest! -Birdymckee

That my point exactly it isn’t about bringing them in a court room in front of a judge; its about taking justic into ur own hands (revenge). IF this is how u would act then I am thinking differently about what r soldiers r really doing too. This is a sick and twisted thought- (revenge). If u don’t want to be shot at then don’t take the damn job, u know the risk. Its not like u walked into this job not knowing the facts. (85) novella says:

The police departments are (corrupt) !!!! You are hearing more and more of these things happening. We look at our officers as “heros” or its “justified” no matter what they do. It shows that the ones that we call “scumbags” in jails aren’t the only ones breaking the laws. And cops sticking together know matter what is going on “brothers of the uniform” are just as guilty. There not your brother- they are in a uniform just as u r paid to do a job that they were hired to do- just as u were hired. To obey the laws!! More and more cops are going to lose their lives- even the really good ones- bc of the bad cops that are in these departments. Which more and more people r losing respect for our laws bc the laws only applies to certain people to obey by. Man makes laws-hires other men to enforce the laws- but the one who makes them and enforces them don’t obey by them either. This is the system that we live in. If you want to get way with #### just become a police officer- laws don’t apply to you- u can shoot people and u will not get into trouble its always “justified” bc of ur uniform. Interesting system! Just bc u haven’t been in jail doesn’t mean that u aren’t a
criminal. As far as getting revenge for ur love ones if they were murdered… its against the law for regular citizens to take the law into ur own hands. U can’t just track down a person and kill them. U would be sitting in the court room with charges ur self for “murder.”

@Kool Luke

If everyone reaps what they sow tenfold, then I think the perp deserves another 12 rounds. A double tap and 10 behind the ear should fit the bill.

First off, I’m not surprised they shot him. He already proved himself armed and violent.

Secondly, if you do not surrender and choose to draw on 10 armed men that have identified themselves as police officers, then they will fire to protect themselves.

Finally, 68 rounds seems like a lot to unfamiliar eyes. But in a firefight the general rule of thumb is to fire until the target goes down. 9 men with automatic weapons would expend that many rounds in just a few short seconds.

I do not see any reason to bring these cops anymore trouble. They did precisely what you are supposed to do. I would say they deserve a commendation.

(105) J says:

While many law enforcement officers have (and do) use their position of authority to take advantage of others, we need to all remember that this SWAT team was searching for a man who had just killed a fellow officer and K9 dog the previous day. They found the man unwilling to show both hands and according to the article “….they spotted a handgun in one of his hands, they opened fire.” Mr. Freeland made the choice to die that day not only because he didn’t drop his weapon, but because his previous actions (killing of Deputy Williams) gave SWAT officers plenty of reason to believe that he would’ve been willing to attempt to kill them as well. As far as the 110 shots, well that’s just simple math. 9 officers were in positions from where they could shoot Freeland. If 5 of the officers were armed with MP5 submachine guns (average rate of fire 800 RPM), and 4 were armed with M4 carbines (average rate of fire – 775 RPM – actually often higher). Upon sight of the handgun, it would take each of the nine officers only .93 seconds of pressing the trigger (on automatic) for 110 rounds to go downrange. Being that they ALL have the obligation to fire to protect themselves and their teammates (once a threat is identified), it is not that surprising that so many shots were fired. Even if more handguns (rather than the above mentioned weapons) were involved it would not take more than a couple of seconds to produce such a hail of bullets. Just some thoughts. Those officers were more than justified in their actions and it’s disturbing how many seem to disregard the killing of Deputy Williams and his police dog.

It shouldn’t be surprising at all that so many rounds were fired.

It’s incredibly difficult to see when someone’s been hit, and the first thing any good soldier, or cop, will try to do in a firefight is put out as much lead on the target as possible.

The criminal is responsible for their own actions. For them to think it is okay to shoot and kill us for simply doing our jobs as sworn LEOs…not okay in fact. They have to know when they cross a line they they will be met head on. We are not trained to kill…but we are also not trained to wound!

it doesn’t make sense. a 10 member team of swat officers would have much more ammo. 9 of the 10 officers fired running out of ammo at 110.12.2222222 rounds each. what the hell?

(127) C. Turtle says:

I think that the situation was handled incorrectly. Instead of shooting that poor picked upon black man, the police should have gathered a few of the individuals who feel sorry for him and have them walk up to him in the woods, (unarmed), and talked him into peacefully giving himself up to the police. Sure!

what exactly were these leos suppose to do with this guy? stand there and beg him to surrender? wait him out? what? im sick of seeing cop killers being treated like royalty with kid gloves. we have to stand behind our law enforcement men and women no try to micro analyze every move they make. the killers expect respect and their constitutional rights to remain in tact when they committ the heinous crimes that they do. if u have a problem with how they handle themselves- do NOT call on them when some thug robs u or breaks into ur home or threatens ur life and my aboslute favorite is when u have a mentally unstable person causing u grief and has access to assault weapons-do NOT call them cops-handle it urself and see what happens!

(135) Julie says:

Did anyone assess whether he spoke english and understood when they asked him to raise his hands? This execution and lack of remorse for it, in fact bragging about it is inappropriate for an officer of the law. This is why police never are rated high by the public in having trust and integrity in them. Firemen and Nurses rate the highest. We expect Men of the law to obey the laws, respect the justice system. I’m sure a full investigation is in process, to weed out the bad seeds. This is unacceptable behavior.

(136) julie says:

A key point many of you are missing is that there is no evidence except the account of these officers that this man did anything wrong or had a gun at all. This all took place in the wooded area, no video footage of this crime. For all we know this was a setup. But we will never know, there is only one side to tell the story….no trial, no evidence, no suspect. For all we know, the cop’s partner could have killed him and dog because he was sleeping with his wife. (The deputy not the dog, ewww) That is why we have a justice system people.

While I don’t mourn the loss of this man, I am concerned with the inefficiency with which it was done. 42 shots missed, I’d hate to have lived in the vicinity with that many stray bullets ricocheting through the woods.
As there was no mention return fire, this could have been executed in a more professional manner, instead of haphazardly firing in order to make soup out of the creep!

I wonder if they would have extracted such vengeance if it were one of my loved ones that was murdered. I seriously doubt so since they refused to consider the death penalty when both my Mother and Niece were gummed down in the Moss Justice centers parking lot.

Must admit, I wish they would have made soup out of that creep as well!

GOOD ! Thank God for Sheriff Judd ! Finally a Sheriff (besides Sheriff Arpio) who has a backbone! The best crime prevention is dead criminals! We need to see more dead bad guys, and less dead cops. There Is a thing called suicide by police…..if a cop tells you to show your hands over and over and you don’t show your hands come on now. He wanted to die, or he would have showed his hands. People are always trying to find the rights for the criminals, what about the rights for the innocent people? Anyone bringing race into this is not too bright either. I’m just amazed that people are upset over this. The amount of people on here making asinine comments amazes me.
