A 22-year-old teacher's assistant at a North Carolina high school has been charged with sexual activity with a 19-year-old student and has been fired from her position at North Buncombe High School.
Heather Shelton (pictured) had not yet been arrested as of Thursday night. She began working at the school in February after she graduated from college with a degree in elementary education. She worked with special-needs students at North Buncombe.
Shelton, like former teacher Pamela Rogers who was arrested earlier this week for contacting her teen victim, has a MySpace.com web site, but her photos had been removed from the site by Friday morning, but not before they were downloaded by several news outlets.
In North Carolina it is a felony for any teacher to have sex with a student regardless of the age of the student. Authorities said Shelton and the unnamed 19-year-old, who was not her student, had sex April 1. If they had waited two months until he graduated, no charges would have been filed, said Detective Anne Benjamin.
