Florida Bans Sex Offenders From Hurricane Shelters

Tuesday August 9, 2005
The state of Florida has banned sex offenders from public hurricane shelters in an effort to keep predators away from children. Offenders who are tracked by the state can seek refuge from hurricanes at the state's prison facilities.

Offenders who go to the state's prisons to get out of the weather will stay in the visitor areas or meeting rooms, according to Robby Cunningham of the Department of Corrections.

"They are not incarcerated," Cunningham said. "We don't want them on the streets. We don't want them violating their probation either."

The policy only affects sex offenders under state supervision who are not allowed near children. They have to sign a form that outlines instructions, wear an ID badge, and can be searched by authorities at any time.
