Remains Identified as Dylan Groene's

Sunday July 10, 2005
DNA tests by the FBI have confirmed that the human remains found at a remote Montana camp site last week are those of nine-year-old Dylan Groene, who along with his sister Shasta, was abducted from their Coeur d'Alene, Idaho home on May 16 after their mother, her boyfriend and their 13-year-old brother were killed.

The location of the remote western Montana camp site was discovered after eight-year-old Shasta was spotted by a waitress in a Denny's restaurant less than 10 miles from the site of the murders. Investigators interviewed Shasta and collected evidence from the vehicle in which she was riding to find the location.

Arrested was Joseph Edward Duncan III, who is charged with kidnapping. Authorities believe the 42-year-old registered sex offender killed the children's family specifically so that he could abduct the two youngsters for sex. Officials said, although the attack on the family appeared to be random, it was carefully planned and executed.

Kootenai County Sheriff Rocky Watson announced the DNA tests results identifying Dylan Groene in a short news release. Other details of the FBI tests were being withheld in order to protect the further investigation and out of respect for the family.

Meanwhile, a newspaper report said Brenda Kay Groene, 40, her son, Slade Groene, 13, and boyfriend Mark Edward McKenzie, 37, were apparently killed with a hammer, which has yet to be located by investigators. The three were tied up a bludgeoned to death.
