Kalpoe Brothers Freed in Holloway Case

Monday July 4, 2005
Two Surinamese brothers, Deepak and Satish Kalpoe, were ordered released today by a judge in Aruba, who also ordered 17-year-old Joran Van Der Sloot held for another 60 days in connection with the disappearance of Natalee Holloway.

"The detention of Deepak and Satish K. has not been prolonged," court clerk Isella Wernet said. "The suspects are ordered released immediately. The detention of Joran Van Der S. has been prolonged 60 days beginning today."

Under Aruban law, suspects can be held 116 days before being charged by a judge. Van der Sloot has still not been formally charged, his lawyer Antonio Carlo said.

Van Der Sloot's attorneys can appeal the 60-day detention to a three-judge panel. They also can now demand to see all of the evidence the prosecution has against their client.

After the decision to detain Van Der Sloot, his attorney requested and received permission to be present at all further interrogations of his client.
