Although most states have rules to assure that trials are held promptly, you should understand that the pretrial process may take six to twelve months, or more, to complete.

The prosecutor and the court cannot control all of the delays in the process. Continuances are inevitable and may cause you great stress. Keep in mind that court dates often change.

The police officer, prosecutor, defense attorney, judge, jury, and probation officer play important roles as the case moves through the court.
