Carrie McCandless, 29, is accused of having sex with a 17-year-old male student during a school-sponsored camping trip to the Rockies. McCandless turned herself into the Jefferson County Jail after a warrant was issued for her arrest by a Larimer County judge.
McCandless was an English teacher at Brighton Charter High School and wife of the school's principal, Chris McCandless. She has been fired as a teacher and faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted.
Brighton Police Chief Clint Blackhurst said that McCandless ended up being the only adult chaperone, after an adult male chaperone backed out at the last minute, on a student camping trip to Estes Park during the last weekend in October.
Investigators said McCandless and the 17-year-old boy ended up alone in the same room at the YMCA of the Rockies. Charges were filed after police interviewed the boy and about a dozen other witnesses.
