Moundsville Penitentiary Inside a Prison Cell

Two Inmates Slept on Bunks, One Slept on the Hard Floor

The small five by seven cells often housed three prisoners at a time. Two would get the beds, one would sleep on the stone floor. In 1986, the West Virginia Supreme Court ruled the small cells were cruel and unusual punishment and ordered the prison to be closed.
