On August 23, 2005, former baseball legend Dwight Gooden was stopped in Tampa for driving erratically, but fled the scene. The police reported that Gooden's speech was slurred and they smelled alcohol on him. After three days he turned himself into the police and received a misdemeanor DUI and resisting arrest charge.
In March 2006, Gooden was arrested for violating his probation because of cocaine use. As his punishment, he had the choice of an extended probation or prison. He chose prison and spent from April 2006 until his release in November 2006.
