By 1991, battling alcohol and drug problems, Plato was arrested after robbing a video store in Las Vegas. She was given five years probation. However, in 1992, she was arrested again for forging prescriptions for Valium.
On May 7, 1999, Plato appeared on the Howard Stern Show in an effort to kick-start her dying career. During the interview, Stern asked her if she had ever considered suicide which she answered a definite "hell no" and reminded Stern that she had a son and stated she was comfortable in her own skin. The next day while visiting her mother for Mother's Day, she was found dead from a drug overdose that was ruled a suicide.
