Rivera was convicted of the October 1984 strangulation death of 62-year-old Iona Dikes of El Paso. Dikes and another woman, Julia Fleenor, were strangled to death inside their home which was set on fire. Two other women in the home survived the fire. Dikes and Fleenor reportedly had been sexually assaulted before being strangled.
