Details of the Crime:
On the morning of August 11, 1985, 31-year-old Beverly St. George was in route to Quantico, Virginia when her car broke down. The next morning she was found dead, partially clothed with two gunshot wounds to her head, in a cemetery located in St. Johns County, Florida.
Investigation of the Crime:
The investigators were able to match shell casings collected around the body of Beverly St. George with casings from a .22-caliber pistol that had recently been reported as stolen.
Five days after Beverly St. George was murdered, Robinson was arrested for robbing four people in a car that was broken down along the highway. He was also charged with raping one of them. The tires of the car Robinson was driving when arrested matched the tire tracks found at the crime scene of Ms. St. George.
Police Interrogation of Robinson:
When questioned by the detectives, Robinson admitted to encountering St. George on the highway. He said that they went to the cemetery to have consensual sex on the hood of his car and began to struggle with each other when he insulted her. At that point, he said the gun went off accidently and a bullet went into the woman's face. He said he feared no one would believe that it was an accident so he shot her again.
Codefendant Clinton Fields testified that Robinson pulled up behind the disabled car of Beverly St.George, pointed a gun at her and forced her into his car. He handcuffed the victim then drove to the cemetery where he raped her on top of the hood of the car. Fields then raped the victim, at Robinson's command. Afterwards Robinson raped her again then shot and killed her out of fear that she could identify him.
Testimony of Medical Examiner :
Dr. Robert McConaghie, the medical examiner for St. Johns County, Florida testified that St. George received two gunshot wounds to her face, one of which entered in the left cheek, traveled into the bottom of the skull through the mid-brain and ended up on the right side of the back of her head. The second bullet entered the left side of her forehead, went backwards into the right and also ended up in the back of the right side of the head. There was extensive hemorrhage inside the skull.
Robinson was on parole for an earlier rape in Maryland in the 1970s when he kidnapped, raped and murdered Beverly St. George. The jury found him guilty of killing St. George and he was convicted of 1st-degree murder and received a death sentence.
His accomplice, Clinton Bernard Fields, was 16 at the time of the murder and is serving a life sentence. His young codefendant Clinton Fields, got life after testifying against him.
Issues About the Trial:
During the prosecutor's closing arguments, he made what could be considered racial comments resulting in Robinson's first death sentence to be overturned in 1986. However, three years later he was again condemned to death.
Robinson was moved into the execution cell on February 4, 2003. His final meal was fried chicken gizzards, french fries, smoked sausage and butter pecan ice cream.
He was scheduled to die February 4, 2003 at 6 p.m. at the Florida State Prison, but 15 minutes before the procedure was to begin it was halted by the Supreme Court until "further word" which came at 7 p.m. with a 5-4 vote to refuse to stop the execution.
At 7:23 p.m. the curtains to the execution room were opened. Robinson layed strapped to a gurney with the intravenous tubes in place in his arms. He was asked by a prison official if he had any last words. "Yep!" he said. Then he said, "Later!"
Robinson was pronounced dead at 7:34 p.m. by lethal injection.
