In October 2003, just 11 days after their wedding in Alabama, David Gabriel Watson and Christina Mae Watson (known as Gabe and Tina) went diving off Australia's Great Barrier Reef on their honeymoon. During the dive, Tina drowned and sunk to the bottom of the sea. Gabe, a trained rescue diver, did not attempt to rescue her but went to the surface instead to get help.

Before the defense presented a single witness, a judge dismissed all charges against an Alabama man accused of killing his wife on a honeymoon diving trip to Australia. Judge Tommy Nail granted a defense motion for acquittal of the murder charges against Gabe Watson for the death of his wife Tina.
