Police Mug Shot
On May 30, 2010, Joran Van der Sloot met 21-year-old Stephany Flores in a casino in Lima, Peru. They left the casino together and she was later found dead in his hotel room. Van der Sloot fled by bus to Chile where he was arrested and returned to Peru.

After hours of interrogation by Peruvian authorities during which he was confronted with overwhelming evidence of his guilt, Van der Sloot tearfully confessed to the murder of Flores.

Flores Learns Who Joran Is

While Van der Sloot and Flores were playing online poker on his laptop in the hotel room, a message popped up that said, "I'm going to kill you, you little Mongoloid."

When Van der Sloot explained the message to Flores and revealed that he was the chief suspect in the disappearance of Alabama teen Natalee Holloway in Aruba exactly five years previously, Flores became upset and struck him in the head.

Van der Sloot's Confession

The following is a transcript of Joran Van der Sloot's confession to Peruvian investigators:

"She struck me on the left side of my head with her fist."

"At that moment, impulsively, with my right elbow. I hit her in the face exactly on top of her nose."

"I think she started to faint. It affected me so that I grabbed her from the neck and strangled her for a minute."

"There was blood everywhere. What am I going to do now? I had blood on my shirt. There was also blood on the bed, so I took off my shirt and put it on her face, pressing hard, until I killed Stephany."

Van der Sloot Gives More Details

When the investigators asked for more details, Van der Sloot continued:

"She was on the bed when I hit her hard with my right elbow and I think her head went back and hit the wall, then she begins to bleed. Immediately I get on top of her and with both hands I begin to strangle her, keeping her that way for a minute. After that, I throw her to the floor, but she keeps breathing. At that moment I take off my shirt and put it on her face, pressing on it. I don't remember for how long, but she stops breathing. In this way I think I caused her death."

"She hit me in the head. I lost control of my actions. I didn't know what I was doing. I remember what I was doing, but not the motive. It was an impulsive act after receiving a blow to the head." "I didn't know what I was doing. "After I responded with hitting her, I feared that she would go to the police and they would detain me for what was an impulsive act. I think I wanted to kill her because I wasn't thinking."

Claimed He Was Drunk

Van der Sloot told the police that he had 10 drinks while at the casino where he met Flores at a poker table.

After her murder, he left his hotel room and purchased two cups of coffee and some cake. He returned to the room and ate breakfast while Flores laid dead on the floor. He then stole her money, credit cards and her SUV. He ditched the vehicle in a bad neighborhood and took a bus to Chile, according to Peruvian police.

Van der Sloot was officially charged with murder and transferred to a Peruvian prison to await trial.
