Man Sought for Telecommunications Fraud
A 25-year-old Miami man is being sought by the FBI in connection with a scheme to defraud telecommunications companies out of $1.5 million in services. Authorities believe that Edwin Andres Pena fled the United States after he was charged with wire fraud and computer intrusion in August 2006.
Investigators believe that Pena hacked into the computer systems of dozens of telecommunications companies between July 2005 and June 2006 to route voice-over-internet protocol (VOIP) calls through their systems for his own profit.
Pena made more than $1 million off the calls and deprived the companies of more than $1.5 million in services. After he was arrested and released on bond, the FBI believes he fled to Venezuela and Colombia where he has connections.
