Death Penalty Sought in Clemson Bikini Murder
South Carolina prosecutors will seek the death penalty for Jerry (Buck) Inman in the murder of Clemson University student Tiffany Maria Souers, who was found strangled to death in her off-campus apartment with her own bikini top. No date has been scheduled for the trial, but a gag order was issued for anyone involved in the case last week.
"We have completed our review of the case and have spoken with both law enforcement and the Souers family," prosecutor Bob Ariail said in a statement. "We are all in agreement that this is the proper course for us to take."
Tiffany Souers, 20, was found by a former roommate in her apartment May 26. Inman was arrested two weeks later and was charged with Souers' murder as well as an attempted rape of an Alabama woman and the rape of a Sevierville, Tennessee woman four days before Souers' death.
Last week, Circuit Judge John Few issued the gag order on attorneys and law enforcement officials connected with the case.
"This case has received and continues to receive considerable publicity," the order states. "Both the solicitor and counsel for the defendant have expressed concern over the effect of continued pretrial publicity on the right of the State and of the Defendant to get a fair trial."
