Sniper Sought in Judge's Shooting

Thursday June 15, 2006
Police are seeking a well-known pawnshop owner in connection with the shooting of a controversial family-court judge, who was wounded in his third-floor courthouse office by a sniper's bullet.

Judge Chuck Weller, 53, was wounded in the chest while standing near the window of his courthouse office Monday. He is listed in serious condition at a Reno hospital. Police said the shot was fired from about 400 feet from the courthouse building.

Darren Roy Mack (pictured) is being sought in connection with the Judge's shooting and the stabbing death of his estranged wife the same day at her apartment. Mack, 45, had appeared before Judge Weller in connection with a pending divorce from his wife Charla.

Mack reportedly declared bankruptcy after Weller ordered him to start paying alimony and child support that Mack believed was excessive. The custody of the couple's three children was also an issue in the divorce.

According to CNN, Judge Weller was the target of complaints on several web sites that are critical of family court judges. One father called Weller the "worst judge in America."

Friends called Judge Weller a "no-nonsense" judge who had to deal with difficult issues in the family court setting.
