Plea Deal Set for Mark Hacking?

Wednesday April 6, 2005
Speculation is that the trial of Mark Hacking for shooting his wife in the head and dumping her body in trash bin may not take place as scheduled next month because a plea agreement may be in the works.

Although not confirmed by either the prosecution or the defense, court reporters speculate that the trail will either be delayed or a plea deal is in the works because a deadline for filing court papers in the case, 30 days prior to trial, has passed with no filings recorded.

In felony criminal cases in Utah, attorneys must submit a list of witnesses who will testify and file any evidentiary motions 30 days before the trial is scheduled to begin. That deadline passed with neither side filing.

Police say Hacking confessed to family members to shooting his pregnant wife, Lori Hacking, in the head while she slept in July 2004, and putting her body in a trash bin. Her badly decomposed body was not found until October.
