Man Suspected in 1972 Murders Wanted in Counselors' Death

A man police have been seeking for almost 33 years in connection with the murders of a young couple on Vancouver Island, is now wanted for questioning in the deaths of two Christian camp counselors on a California beach last August.

Police have long sought Joseph Henry Burgess, described as a religious fanatic, because they believe he shot and killed Leif Carlsson and Ann Durrant as they camped on a beach on Vancouver Island. They say his motive for killing the young couple was because they were cohabitating out of wedlock.

Investigators say Burgess waited for the couple to go to sleep and then shot them in the head with a .22 caliber rifle.

Now police are looking for Burgess in the deaths of Lindsay Cutshall of Ohio and Jason Allen of Michigan, two Christian camp counselors who were camping on Fishhead Beach in Jenner, California. They were both shot in the head with a .45 caliber rifle while they slept in their sleeping bags on the beach.

Police want to question Burgess due to the similarities in the crimes.
