Ten Killed in Minnesota Student Rampage

Monday March 21, 2005
Ten people died and 14 others injured when a student on a Minnesota Indian reservation went on a killing spree, shooting his grandparents, a teacher, a security guard and as many as 20 students at Red Bank High School.

Police said the student shot his grandparents at their home first then went to the school with a shotgun and two handguns and began shooting and continued even as his classmates begged him to stop.

The student, Jeff Weise, a 17-year-old student who had been placed in the school's Homebound program for some violation of policy, was one of the four students found dead at the school. Authorities said he shot himself.

Sources said the grandfather of the boy was a policeman and his weapons may have been used in the spree. Another 14 students were injured in the incident, two of them critically who were later pronounced dead at the hospital.

The high school is on the Red Lake Indian Reservation, home to the Red Lake Band of Chippewa Indians.
