Body of Lori Hacking Found

Friday October 1, 2004
After 33 working days of searching, volunteers found human remains in the Salt Lake landfill that were later confirmed by dental records to be Lori Hacking, who has been missing since July.

"This afternoon, the Salt Lake City police department was notified by the office of the medical examiner that dental records positively identified the remains found at the landfill as those of Lori Hacking," police said.

Volunteer searchers, most of them police, fire or rescue personnel, have been manually searching through 4,600 tons of trash in the landfill since weeks of searching by cadaver dogs failed. About 20 volunteers were just beginning their search again Friday when the remains were found.

"It means everything to us to find Lori's mortal remains so that we might lay them to rest with dignity," Hacking's parents, Eraldo and Thelma Soares, said in a prepared statement.
