Investigators would not say what led them to the arrest of Wyngarden after more than 25 years.
According to court papers, however, Wyngarden's wife told investigators that he admitted to her that he was responsible for the shooting deaths.
Wyngarden apparently was not a suspect at the time of the crime. He was quoted in a local newspaper praising the couple as very compatible.
Evidence Surfaces in Last 2 Months
"They were the nicest people in the world. I've never seen a couple get along better than they did," Wyngarden said in 1987.
More details are expected to be released about the case when Wyngarden appears at a preliminary hearing scheduled in February. Investigators conducted more than 200 interviews in the case since 2011, but Ottawa County Sheriff Lt. Mark Bennett said evidence linking Wyngarden to the deaths was uncovered in the past 60 days.
Wyngarden is being held without bond. He has been appointed an attorney.
