Authorities and family members alike are puzzled over the disappearance of an Illinois woman who vanished after a car crash in the snow which killed her husband. After three days of searching, officials suspended their search for Tanya Shannon near the scene of the fatal car crash.

Killed in the crash was her husband, Dale Shannon, 41, who was behind the wheel of the vehicle following a party at a friend's house.

Tanya and Dale Shannon attended a friend's holiday party on Saturday night and were headed home on a well-traveled highway when they apparently crashed in the snow about 70 miles southwest of Chicago.

Footprints in the Snow

Footprints in the snow led only a short way from the crash vehicle where searchers found one slipper at the end of the trail. Tanya was wearing a red evening dress and heels at the party. She apparently changed into slippers for the ride home, police said.

Searchers used poles to probe snow banks, metal detectors and even a helicopter over the flat terrain, but found no trace of her.

"It's just one of those weird situations," Sergeant Jeff Whalen of the LaSalle County Sheriff's office told reporters. "We have no idea what happened."

The couple has four children ranging in ages from 4 to 15. They are currently staying with other family members.
