The Testimony of Elizabeth Smart

By November 11, 2010

Follow me on:

Elizabeth Smart, who was 14 when she was abducted at knifepoint from her Salt Lake City bedroom, spent three days on the witness stand describing her nine-month ordeal in detail. Smart, now 23, described her abductor, Brain David Mitchell, as a crude and vulgar person who used religion to justify his self-serving actions.

Smart told jurors that Mitchell used religion to justify sex, alcohol and drug use, including raping her almost daily.

Thanks to The Salt Lake Tribune, the complete transcript of Elizabeth Smart's testimony is available online:

From the night she was awakened in her bedroom with a knife pressed to her neck to the day she was reunited with her father in a Sandy, Utah police station, Smart described in detail for the jury what her life was like for nine months with Mitchell and his former wife Wanda Barzee.

A Cunning Criminal

Most importantly perhaps, Smart's detailed testimony reveals Mitchell as a cunning master criminal and deceiver who could talk his way out of close calls with the authorities, rather than the religious zealot who suffers from progressive mental illness, as his defense attorneys claim.

"He was his number one priority, followed by sex, drugs and alcohol, but he used religion in all of those aspects to justify everything," Smart told the jury.

"Nine months of living with him and seeing him proclaim that he was God's servant and called to do God's work and everything he did to me and my family is something that I know that God would not tell somebody to do," she said. "God would never tell someone to kidnap her at knifepoint from their bed, from her sister's side ... never continue to rape her and sexually abuse her."

Smart told jurors that she remained with Mitchell throughout the nine months because he threatened to kill her family if she tried to escape.
