15-Year-Old Female Arrested in Girl's Murder
In what authorities are describing as an "unusual case," a 15-year-old female has been arrested in the murder of a 9-year-old Missouri girl who disappeared a week ago. Police say the teen in custody lead them to the well-concealed body of Elizabeth Olten of St. Martins.A hearing is scheduled today to determine if the juvenile will be held in custody or released to her family.
Missouri authorities are saying very little about the investigation because the suspect is a juvenile, not even initially releasing the gender of the person under arrest. The teen has met with her family and her lawyer since being detained.
"We are taking every precaution that we need to take in order to ensure the protection of that individual," Cole County Juvenile Court Administrator Michael Couty said at a news conference.
Tried As An Adult?
Today's hearing is a detention hearing in juvenile court. Juvenile officials will ask the judge to hold the suspect in custody. On Nov. 18, another hearing will determine if the juvenile will be tried as an adult. The charge is first-degree murder.
On Wednesday Oct. 21, Elizabeth (pictured above) disappeared while walking home from a friend's home about a quarter-mile from her house. A massive search by hundreds of volunteers turned up no trace of the nine-year-old.
Cole County Sheriff Greg White said physical and written evidence led investigators to the suspect, reportedly a neighbor of Elizabeth. After she was interviewed, the teen led authorities to Elizabeth's body, which was hidden in thick woods not far from her home.

This world is messed up. Why are kids and teenagers so evil these days? Is it the television, environment, or parenting styles? Whatever it is, evil is all around us.
Times have not changed just incidents are more out in the open look into the name Mary Bell she was even young when she committed her actions.

Not as young as this teenager but young and educated and both brilliant , decided to kill a boy for a thrill kill.
tragic, sick, can’t make sense of things like this now or back then.
I do feel that regarding Mary Bell; it should be noted that her ‘extremely abusive’ childhood certainly had a bearing on the case. Often the abuse these children suffer when later committing crimes of violence is often over looked. I write this not as a defence, but an underlying consideration.
i think she should be tried as an adult. she is 15 and is old enough to know that a murder is wrong and shold be pushied to for a sentence to 25 years or aroun that number anyway.
She knew what she did was wrong because she did a damned good job of hiding that little girl’s body. She definitely should be tried as an adult.
I have 9 year old and see 15 year killing my prayers her family but deal with as an adult.
