D.C. Sniper to Die by Lethal Injection

Tuesday October 27, 2009
John Allen Muhammad, the mastermind of a three-week killing spree in October 2002 that left 10 people dead in the Washington D.C. area, is scheduled to die next month by lethal injection. Because Muhammad did not choose between lethal injection and electrocution, under Virginia law he will be executed by lethal injection.

Barring last minute appeals, Muhammad is set to be executed November 10.

Under Virginia law, condemned criminals are allowed to choose the method of execution. Virginia Department of Corrections spokesman Larry Traylor said Muhammad declined to do so.

Muhammad and his accomplice, teenager Lee Boyd Malvo, were convicted in Maryland and Virginia and received a string of life sentences. Muhammad, however, was given the death penalty in Virginia for the shooting of Dean Harold Meyers at a gas station in Manassas.

Malvo, because he was a juvenile, was not eligible for the death penalty.

The duo are also suspected in shootings in Louisiana and Alabama. The two escaped detection for three weeks because Malvo would shoot their victims sniper style out of a hole cut in the trunk of Muhammad's car.
