A body found Sunday hidden inside the wall of a Yale University building is believed to be doctoral student Annie Le, who has been missing since Tuesday. Le was last seen on videotape going into the Yale Medical School building where her body was found.Police found the body in an area of the building where utility cables run between the floors.
"It hasn't been positively identified as of this time," New Haven Assistant Police Chief Peter Reichard told reporters. "However, we are assuming it is her ... so we are treating it as a homicide."
Physical Evidence Found
Reichard also said that investigators uncovered "a large amount" of evidence at the scene, but he would not elaborate.
A massive search was launched for Le, a pharmacology doctoral student, who was last seen in her laboratory.
Because of the expensive research equipment located in the complex, there are 75 surveillance cameras in and around the building where Le disappeared. When those cameras showed her arriving at the building at 10 a.m. Tuesday, but none of them showed her leaving, police concentrated their search inside the building.
Fiance Not a Suspect
Earlier Sunday, investigators were seen shifting through the waste in the building's incinerator. Police used blueprints of the medical complex to search hidden areas of the buildings.
Le, from Placerville, California, wrote a magazine article earlier this year about how to stay safe around the Ivy League campus. The article, "Crime and Safety in New Haven," was published in a magazine published by Yale's medical school.
Le was scheduled to be married Sunday, the day her body was found. Police said her fiance was not a suspect.
