The Supreme Court ruled (8 to 1) that the strip search of a middle school girl was unconstitutional.According to reports, Savana Redding, 13, was strip searched after another student reported her for bringing prescription strength ibuprofen into the school. The strip search was performed by a female nurse under the direction of the assistant principal. There were no drugs found on Redding.
Justice David Souter said about the strip search that, "Here, the content of the suspicion failed to match the degree of intrusion."
Justice Clarence Thomas was the one who voted that the search was lawful stating that the ruling, "Grants judges sweeping authority to second-guess the measures that these officials take to maintain discipline in their schools and ensure the health and safety of the students in their charge."
