Arrest Warrant Issued in Chandra Levy Case
Eight years after Washington D.C. intern Chandra Levy was murdered while walking her dog in Rock Creek Park, an arrest warrant has been issued in the case. Ingmar Guandique, a Salvadoran immigrant and a California federal prison inmate, has been charged with the May 1, 2001 murder.Guandique is serving time in federal prison for attacking two women in the same park.
The 24-year-old Levy, originally from Modesto, had recently completed her internship with the U.S. Bureau of Prisons when she took her dog for a walk in the Washington park near her apartment. She disappeared wearing jogging clothes.
During the yearlong search for the missing intern, the political career of U.S. Rep. Gary Condit of California was destroyed after it became public that he had had an affair with Levy after at first denying it.
Condit Never a Suspect
Speculation abounded in the media that he may have had something to do with her disappearance, but Condit was never named as a suspect in the case. He lost his bid for re-election in 2002.
A year after she disappeared, a man walking his dog found her skeletal remains in the park.
In 2002, investigators questioned Guandique in connection with the Levy case, but he was not charged at that time. Authorities have not revealed why he has now been charged, but reports said agents were interviewing inmates that he had spoken with at the federal prison in Adelanto, California.
"It dawned on me that there's very little I can do or anyone else can do for the Levys other than to offer them justice," District of Columbia Police Chief Cathy Lanier said at a news conference. "This has been a long time coming."
