Suspect in Eve Carson Case Faces Federal Charges
One of the suspects in the murder of University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill student body president Eve Carson will be arraigned in federal court on charges that could bring him the death penalty. Demario James Atwater will be charged with carjacking resulting in death.Atwater will face arraignment in U.S. District Court on December 2.
Atwater and 17-year-old Laurence Alvin Lovette Jr. also face the death penalty on state charges of first-degree murder, robbery and kidnapping. Authorities said the two kidnapped Carson at gunpoint, forced her to withdraw money from ATM machines and then shot her five times and left her in the middle of a street near the university campus on March 5.
At Central Prison, where Atwater has been held since his arrest, he has been charged with threatening staff, tampering with locks and gang involvement. He has a total of nine prison infractions since his arrest March 12.
