New Trial Rejected for O.J. Simpson

Monday November 10, 2008
O.J. Simpson's first attempt to obtain a new trial, for his conviction of robbing two sports memorabilia dealers in a Las Vegas casino hotel rooms, has been rejected by a Nevada judge. Clark County District Judge Jackie Glass ruled that issues raised by Simpson's attorneys did not merit granting a new trial.

The judge also denied bail for Simpson and his co-defendant Clarence "C.J." Stewart until their sentencing Dec. 5.

"They face life sentences, mandatory prison," Glass said when ruling on the bail issue. "Your motions are being denied."

Both Simpson and Stewart appeared at the hearing shackled and dressed in prison clothes. They can appeal Judge Glass' ruling to the Nevada Supreme Court, the state's only appeals court.

No Juror Misconduct

Stewart's attorney challenged statements made by the jury foreman after the trial, saying that it showed prejudice toward Simpson and his client. Prosecutor Chris Owens argued that defense lawyers "were not under any illusions" about Connelly's opinions after reviewing his jury questionnaire and asking him questions directly.

"I find that nothing has risen to a level of juror misconduct," Glass ruled.
