College Student ID Thief Gets 5 Years

Monday October 20, 2008
A former Drexel University student, who pleaded guilty to aggravated identity theft after stealing personal information from friends and neighbors to finance the lavish lifestyle of her and her boyfriend, has been sentenced to five years in federal prison. Jocelyn Kirsch could have received up to 70 months.

Her boyfriend, Edward Anderton, will be sentenced Tuesday.

Kirsch, 23, was also ordered to pay more than $100,000 in restitution. Prosecutors said Kirsch and Anderton bilked their Philadelphia friends and neighbors out of more than $116,000 in goods and services. They used the scheme to pay of exotic vacations, visits to lavish salons and expensive dinners.

U.S. District Judge Eduardo C. Robreno said he took into account Kirsch's apparent remorse and her July 14 guilty pleas when sentencing her to less than the federal guideline recommendation.

Anderton, 25, is a University of Pennsylvania graduate.
