Woman With 5 Dead Spouses Released From Jail

Friday October 17, 2008
A 76-year-old woman charged with soliciting the murder of her fourth husband and suspected in the deaths of her other four dead husbands was released from jail after posting bond. Betty Neumar, 76, was able to make bond after a judge reduced her bond from $500,000 to $300,000 earlier this week.

She is charged with solicitation to commit first-degree murder in the 1986 death of her fourth husband, Harold Gentry.

"I can't believe they let her out. It's just wrong, flat out wrong. I don't understand," said Gentry's brother, Al, who worked for more than 20 years to get the murder case reopened.

Neumar was arrested and charged after investigators found evidence that she tried to hire three different people to kill Harold Gentry in the weeks leading up to his death. He was found on the floor of his North Carolina home with multiple gunshot wounds.

More Investigations Launched

After her arrest for Gentry's murder, law enforcement officials in Florida and Ohio began looking into the suspicious deaths of three of her other husbands. In Georgia, however, investigators said they could find no evidence that Neumar was involved in the death of her fifth husband, John Neumar.

"I've lost all faith in the legal system," his son, John K. Neumar, told reporters.

Meanwhile, Neumar's attorney Charles Parnell said the case against her has "been blown out of proportion" and more and more evidence is surfacing that she had no part in any of her husband's deaths.
