Accused Marine Fighting Extradition from Mexico
An attorney for a U.S. Marine accused of killing a pregnant colleague and burying her body in a fire pit in his back yard said his client is fighting extradition to Mexico. In September, North Carolina officials said a Mexican court had approved Cpl. Cesar Laurean's return to the United States and jail officials were preparing for his return. Now Dick McNeil, Laurean's attorney, said he has filed an extradition appeal in a Mexican court.
Laurean is charged with first-degree murder in connection with the murder of Marine Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach who was eight months pregnant when she was killed. The remains of Lauterbach, a 20-year-old from Vandalia, Ohio, were found in Laurean's Jacksonville, North Carolina back yard.
Laurean fled in Mexico in January as authorities found Lauterback's remains. He was arrested in April.
