'Preppie Killer' Gets 19-Year Drug Sentence

Wednesday September 3, 2008
The "preppie killer" has received his second long-term prison sentence. Robert Chambers, who served 15 years in prison for killing a woman during what he said was a rough sex encounter, has now been sentenced to 19 years in prison for selling cocaine to an undercover police officer.

The sentence came after Chambers pleaded guilty last month.

On Aug. 11, Chambers pleaded guilty to criminal sale of a controlled substance and assault on a police officer in a plea deal that allowed him to avoid a life sentence under New York's tough anti-drug laws.

Earlier, Chambers' girlfriend Shawn Kovell entered a guilty plea and was expected to testify against him. They were both arrested in his apartment in October 2007 in an undercover drug sting. Kovell's plead deal allows her to complete a drug rehabilitation program then plead to a lesser charge and receive probation. She was a first offender.

Chambers, 41, previously served every day of his 15-year sentence for the Central Park murder of his girlfriend, because of his drug problems behind bars.
