Susan LeFevre to Stand Trial for 1976 Escape

Tuesday August 19, 2008
A California woman who was captured 32 years after she escaped from a Michigan prison will now face trial on the escape charge. The attorney for Susan LeFevre, who became a suburban mother of three after her escape, says she waived her right to a preliminary hearing in the escape case in hopes of moving it more quickly to trial.

After her arrest in April, LeFevre was returned to Michigan to continue serving her original 10-year sentence for selling heroin.

In 1976, after serving one year of her sentence, LeFevre climbed over a barbed-wire fence to escape from a prison in Detroit. When she was arrested in San Diego in April, she was living as Marie Walsh, a wife and mother of three children.

She was captured after U.S. Marshals received an anonymous tip. Fingerprints were used to confirm that Maria Walsh was really Susan LeFevre.

Uncomfortable in Prison

Her attorney, William Swor, says that LeFevre is being harassed by inmates and staff at the Scott Correctional Facility in Plymouth, Michigan.

"She's extremely uncomfortable. ... She's been reminded she's the suburban mom," Swor told reporters. "There are staff that are extraordinarily kind. There are staff that" are singling her out for special attention. There's nowhere she can go to be alone. There's nowhere she can go to get peace."

Swor is also working to get her original drug sentence thrown out, arguing that the 19-year-old never expected to get a 10-year sentence when she agreed to plead guilty. "It was cookie-cutter sentencing with no regard to the details of each case," Swor said.

(2) CAPITALIZING letters SHOWS how SELF-righteous I am ABOUT things! says:

commenter number 1: you are a fool. Your knee-jerk reaction is precisely the thing which is getting in the way of justice. There is a bigger issue here, the issue of why our system of ‘justice’ is so bent on “zero-tolerance” and “three strikes” types of punishments for non-violent crime. The only thing these laws cause are inflated prison populations. What has done more damage to our neighborhoods: the drugs themselves, or the criminalization of them? Investigate the facts before you respond.
