Suspected Killer of 8 Captured Outside Bar

Wednesday July 2, 2008
An Illinois man who police believe went on a killing spree that left eight people dead in two states has been captured outside a Granite City bar following a massive manhunt. Nicholas T. Sheley, 28, was captured after a bartender and a customer recognized him inside Bindy's Bar about 10 miles north of St. Louis.

Sheley, an ex-convict, became the subject of a FBI manhunt Tuesday afternoon and his photo was placed on digital billboards across the country. He was arrested around 7 p.m. the same day.

The FBI said that Sheley is wanted for a home invasion in Sterling, Illinois and suspected in eight homicides. All of the victims died as a result of blunt force trauma. The victims include an elderly man in Whiteside County, Illinois; a couple in Festus, Missouri; a 65-year-old man in Galesburg, Illinois and three adults and one child in Rock Falls, Illinois.

Evidence at Each Crime Scene

Prior to his arrest, Sheley was officially charged in one of the cases. He was charged with first-degree murder, aggravated battery and vehicular hijacking in connection with the death of Ronald Randall. His body was found Monday behind a grocery store in Galesburg, Illinois.

Randall died from blunt force trauma to the head, an autopsy revealed. The FBI said that all of the other victims died in the same manner and that evidence at each scene was linked to Sheley. Investigators would not elaborate.

Sheley has been convicted of home invasion robbery, drug and weapons charges in the past and has spent three years in prison.
